The Astara Team, competition team created to make rally history Dakar Rally 2022 with the aim of demonstrating that it is possible to offer the most efficient, smart and sustainable mobility solution possible for anyone and on any terrain.
After an in-depth analysis of the technical options available and the requirements of the Dakar, the team opted for the best possible solution: racing a light vehicle powered by synthetic fuel or e-fuel. This fuel Eco-friendly is produced from water and CO2 in the air, and is carbon neutral, since the CO2 that it emits during its combustion is the same that has been extracted from the atmosphere during the production process. What's more, does not emit solid waste or microparticles.
The couples Jesus Calleja-Edu Blanco y Oscar Fuertes-Diego Vallejo, with a lot of experience in the Dakar, will participate at the wheel of two 01 concept classified in category T1.3 (two-wheel-drive buggy).
It is a very fast and efficient car that stands out for being the lightest in its category and to this is added that e-fuel is the way to carry energy that occupies less size and weight.
Thanks to this it is able to board 3.870 kWh of energy with its full e-fuel tanks, which only weigh about 400 kilos. Batteries capable of storing the same amount of energy would weigh more than 22 tons (with an energy density of 0,17 kWh per kilo).
The carbon footprint will be measured and reported of the team cars that will compete in the Dakar. This accounting and reporting of the emissions of racing cars will be carried out according to standardized measurement protocols (GHG Protocol, ISO 14064 standard) and will be reviewed by a prestigious independent entity.
"Although it is my fifth Dakar, this year makes me especially excited because we are practically with everything new", assures Calleja, who also thinks that “we have a new concept of a vehicle that is much more sustainable because it uses e-fuel with a low carbon footprint. You have to bet on change in order to move forward. "
While Fuertes stated: “We started a new adventure in the Dakar and we do it with great enthusiasm. Our main objective is to show that we have the best possible solution to race in the Dakar. We know that we are competitive and that we can fight for a good final result ”.
The Dakar 2022 rally will start on January 1 in Ha'il (Saudi Arabia) with the prologue stage and the starting podium. The next day the real action will start, with the first of the stages of a test that will end on January 14 in Jeddah, On the banks of Red Sea.
