The BMW Group took advantage of the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este to present the BMW 8 Series Concept, the essence of a modern BMW coupe wrapped in a fascinating design study.
This study car will serve as a showcase for BMW's next model, the new BMW 8 Series Coupé, which is scheduled to launch in 2018 and is part of the largest model offensive in the company's history.
The silhouette of the BMW 8 Series Concept unfolds low and powerfully down the road. The combination of the long bonnet with a flowing roof line lends a dynamic and attractive shape to the sides of the vehicle, while the striking upward movement of the trailing edge perfectly completes the rear and gives it another sporty edge.
Regarding the vehicle's silhouette, the layout of the surfaces and the forms, pleasant and clean as well as impressive, it is very attractive and creates a modern and elegant look. The crisp lines traced along the firm volumes are a visual promise of the dynamic driving experience that awaits us.
Among the details, there are two very expressive character lines that serve as the edge for a surface that seems to be formed by the air that comes out of the Air Breathers at full power. At the rear, the pronounced widening over the rear wheels steals the spotlight. The set of sides highlights a new aspect of the BMW experience in surface execution. Skillfully molded lines and flowing details accentuate the athletic contours of the new BMW 8 Series Concept.
And the exterior paint finish, Barcelona Gray Liquid, a greyish blue hue with uniquely developed highly iridescent pigments, highlights the surface with optimal effect. The large (21-inch) light-alloy wheels feature a unique sporty multi-spoke design and aerodynamic elements, create a great visual impact and are the finishing touch to the attractive appearance of the vehicle seen in profile.
The large front grille, dual headlights and large air intakes create a sporty and impressive front design. The classic BMW template takes a new interpretation that changes the direction of the company's design language. For example, the two racks are very low and extend widely across the front end. Taking inspiration from the BMW coupes of previous years, the grills are joined by a continuous frame that creates a single oversized element. The grille widens as it is extended downwards, thus emphasizing the dynamic character of the BMW 8 Series Concept. Together with the super slim laser headlights and the hexagonal version of the “double circle” headlights, it gives a more focused style to the front end.
The large air intakes in the front apron intensify the car's spaciousness and sporty character on the road, while promising a purely dynamic driving experience. The carbon fiber element between them highlights the sporty and high-performance character of the vehicle.
The emotional design of the surfaces also dominates the rear of the BMW 8 Series Concept to create a beautifully sculpted low-rise tail, with an effect that increases the maximum width. The rear is defined by the conjunction of volumes and lines, which extend from the sides and shape the rear section of the vehicle. Powerful wheel arches advance the vehicle's great dynamism and announce its rear-wheel drive. In addition, the narrowing of the passenger compartment and the width of the track create a particular focus of attention on this area of the vehicle.
The slim, elongated taillights extend to the sides of the vehicle and act as a connection between the rear and the sides. The lines are L-shaped and protrude from the rear. They emphasize the car's spaciousness and its powerful appearance on the road, and its slim shape adds a modern, ultra-sporty touch.
The slim, dark carbon fiber diffuser in the lower section of the rear apron adds lightness and emphasizes the sporty design of the rear. Large trapezoidal tailpipes frame the rear section and reference the dynamic driving experience that awaits us.
The interior focuses on the essentials: the task of driving. Once behind the wheel, the driver is surrounded by the tightly protected environment typical of sports cars. All surfaces and lines gravitate forward and emphasize the dynamic driving experience. The grouping of functions in control panels, for example in the center panel, the center console and the doors give the interior a clean design structure.
The interior design highlights include the seamless transition from the instrument cluster to the doors, as well as the enveloping, sporty feel of the interior. This impression is intensified by the smooth connection between the center console and the instrument cluster, which together form the core of the interior. The tall center console and the low visual focus of the instrument cluster further emphasize the comfortable, tight and sporty feel of the space.
The interior of the BMW 8 Series Concept actively explores the contrasts between emotion and engineering, dynamic style and luxury; its shape suggests supreme sportiness, while the exquisite materials exude exclusivity and high-end design. For example, all the points of contact between the driver and the car are full of sporty character. The exclusive sports seats have a slim design, their basic structure is made of carbon fiber and the high-quality leather makes them the perfect place to sit. The steering wheel follows a similar line: its hand-polished aluminum spokes point forward and the shift paddles in red anodized are reminiscent of racetracks. The contrast of aluminum and dark leather on the grip surfaces emphasizes this luxurious sense of sportiness in many details.
Merino leather in Dark Brown and Fjord White adds a high-quality vibe to the interior. Highlighted carbon fiber and hand-polished aluminum surfaces create deliberate contrasts and exude a technical and sporty feel. In addition, the faceted gear lever and iDrive controller made from Swarovski crystal with a smoky quartz look give the interior a touch of modern and elegant style.
