The companies Bosch, Autotalks, Cohda Wireless and Ducati developed a prototype of a “smart solution”, which they call “digital protection shield”, to prevent dangerous situations from occurring between motorcycles and cars.
This system will allow "motorcycles and cars to talk to each other, creating a digital protection shield for motorcyclists."
The key to its operation is the exchange of information within a radius of action of “several hundred meters”. According to its creators, it transmits data up to ten times per second on types of vehicles, speed, position and direction in which they are moving.
This makes it possible that, long before the drivers or the sensors of their vehicles detect their presence, they receive information that a motorcycle is approaching and can thus adopt a “more cautious” driving strategy.
Additionally, if the system identifies a “potentially dangerous” situation, it can alert the rider or driver by sounding an alarm and displaying a dashboard warning.
With this "shield", almost a third of motorcycle accidents could be prevented, according to Bosch estimates derived from the investigation of accidents on the road.
