The model left its mark in the history of the automobile with milestones such as the turbocharged diesel engine, its GTi version or the comfort of its hydropneumatic suspension.
Citroën unveiled the CX 2000 at the 1974 Paris Motor Show. It soon stood out for its comfort, ergonomics and road behavior, characteristics that led it to obtain, in the year of its launch, the “Car of the Year in Europe ”, the“ Safety Award ”and the“ Auto Style Award ”, for its innovative style.
Designed by Robert Opron, this 4,63 meter long saloon was the first to be fitted with a diesel engine in Citroën history. With the 1973 oil crisis, the brand, concerned about the costs of using its cars, developed efficient engines, which provided lower fuel consumption together with greater driving pleasure.
Aerodynamics were no stranger to these successes, as evidenced by the name of this model, CX, which illustrates the low air resistance of this vehicle. With this model, Citroën conquered the main European markets, offering an alternative to gasoline vehicles.
In the following years, Citroën continued to update the CX with the appearance of a estate version in 1975, a sports 2400 GTi with electronic injection in 1977 and the Prestige series, 28 cm longer, in 1978.
Renowned for its style and technological audacity, the CX was also a vehicle of great comfort. It inherited from the DS the hydropneumatic suspension with constant height, which gave it impeccable stability on the road; and on the SM 1970, speed-dependent power steering with straight-line automatic return.
Its innovations also offered greater ease of use thanks to elements such as the torque converter, C-matic, which eliminated the clutch pedal and freed up space for greater ease.
In addition, its interior design, designed to provide more comfort for the driver, stood out for a futuristic driving position, which allowed access to all controls without having to release the steering wheel. In 1985 the Citroën CX was the first French car to equip the ABS braking system.
This vehicle became a real commercial success as, up to 1991, more than 1,2 million units were sold.
