The cutting-edge technology and creativity of a team of 200 designers are combined in the new car design process. Three-dimensional recreation systems turn a designer's lines into a virtual vehicle. However, the artisan hands of a sculptor are still necessary to turn an idea into reality for the first time. These are the steps:
PENCIL, PAPER AND 2.000 SKETCHES
The birth of a car is always on paper and pencil. The team of designers proposes up to 2.000 sketches, of which only one can be chosen. Its mission: to draw the personality and the master lines of the new model. The references can come from the world of architecture or fashion. Thus, a bag, shoes or a building serve as inspiration when designing, for example, a seat.
SKETCHES IN 3D
Aesthetics and creativity must also accommodate technical requirements. Thanks to 3D technology and layout programs, the sketches are rendered three-dimensional so that the vehicle design is functional.
AS IF IT WAS A VIDEO GAME
Using a program similar to the creation of video games or animated films, you can see how the design of the new car will be. With Full HD glasses, the engineers have the first sensations behind the wheel inside the virtual vehicle. Thanks to these techniques, the production time is achieved 10 times faster than with traditional processes.
A CLAY CAR, REAL SIZE
The so-called clay model is still necessary to appreciate the volumes of the new car on a real scale. A sculptor is in charge of shaping 2.500 kg of clay using a spatula and a milling machine precisely outlines the lines of the future vehicle.
ONE HUNDRED FORMULAS FOR A SINGLE COLOR
Behind a vehicle's color palette is three years of work to create each shade. In the painting laboratory, creativity and chemistry come together to find the desired tonality. About 100 different formulations are made to achieve a color.
MATTER OF TOUCH
It is not only about finding the right tone but also the textures that the future customer will perceive on the exterior and interior of the car. In this way, graphic designers, textiles and graduates in Fine Arts come together to study surfaces and define proposals for doors or panels, combining mattes and gloss, different engravings on the skin or types of stitching.
THE STEERING WHEEL, 100% HAND UPHOLSTERED
On the high-end models, all ruffles are sewn by hand with a curved needle and skill as the only tools of the seamstress. He designs the patterns himself and uses up to 3 km of thread per color to manually upholster the seats or the handbrake. This professional is part of the team of 200 people who participate in the design of a car, where they work together from craftsmen to specialists in digital recreation techniques.
