Dakar 2022: New regulation predicts fight between buggy and 4 × 4

Four-wheel drive vehicles will be wider and will have the same suspension travel and tires as the 4x2.

The fight between buggies y 4 × 4 vehicles could reach its highest point in the 2022 edition of the rally Dakar Rally, which will take place in Saudi Arabia between 2 and January 14 next, as a result of the changes to the regulations that would allow these concepts to fight as equals.

Dakar Rallylegendary class T1, in which the most powerful vehicles participate, would be renamed as T1 + and will allow various modifications to the machines. Pending approval of the International Automobile Federation, who will discuss the issue at the next meeting 19 July, Automundo knew the main details.

Essentially, the variants affect the 4 × 4, which may be wider since they will go from the current 2,10 meters to the 2,30 meters. In addition, they will have a greater suspension travel that will go from 280 mm to 350 mm and they will be able to fit tires of 37 inches instead of the 32-inch used until this year. The weight, meanwhile, will rise: from 1.850 kg to 1950 kg.

These variants somehow anticipate what will happen four years from now when all elite drivers drive low-emission machines. “We try to make the best decision for everyone and we intend to reach 2026 with a good technical balance. We have four years to achieve parity ”, assured David castera, CEO of the legendary race.
