The category Dakar Classic, which includes 4 × 4s and race buggies from the '80s and' 90s, was an absolute picture hit that won hearts in and out of Saudi bivouacs. These new pioneers and their vintage vehicles inspired many Dakar lovers They have decided to answer the Classic format call.
For the second edition, the participation of almost 150 vehicles in the category a relevant number considering that in 2021 there were 24 participating.
The entry list serves to get an idea of the roster of drivers and crew who will opt for the Dakar Classic. The competitors of the first edition had the merit of signing up by pure spontaneous decision, but now there are well-structured teams and vehicles prepared with much more care at the start.
There will be several Porsche 911, without forgetting the Peugeot 205 Turbo 16 who won the 1987 Dakar with Ari Vatanen at the wheel, the Sunhill and Cotel buggies, the Lada Niva, the Fiat Panda and even some Volkswagen Beetle.
Alongside these legendary cars will compete models that have inscribed their names in gold letters in the great adventure of the Dakar, such as the Mitsubishi montero and T. The range is very complete and the competition will shoot up automatically with the expansion of the category.
The Dakar Classic proposes to the teams a race of constancy and regularity in which they must respect an average that they will choose when registering: H1, middle-low; H2, intermediate mean; H3, High average. The resulting difference in the different sections will be sanctioned with penalty points that will be used to prepare a classification every day.
This career of perseverance, evaluated through the so-called regularity tests, will be enriched this year with navigation tests that will put the focus on the co-drivers. In these stages, the penalty points for the teams will come from the differences in mileage compared to the ideal route. The emphasis will therefore be on the complementarity of the members of each crew.
The Dakar Classic route is a track adapted to the technical characteristics of the participating cars and trucks. In that sense, the unpaved part of the stages never exceed 300 kilometers. However, respecting that distance, this year there will be about 80% of the route made up of competition sections, whether they are regularity tests or navigation tests.
