Andy Warhol (Pittsburgh, August 6, 1928 - New York, February 22, 1987) was one of the many top-notch artists who participated with his talent in the BMW Art Car, a project conceived by the driver and art collector French Hervé Poulain in the mid-1970s.

Warhol contributed his art on a BMW M1 in 1979. “I wanted to faithfully reproduce speed. If the car is really fast all the contours and colors will become blurry, ”said the American shortly after finishing painting the vehicle in just 23 minutes. Indeed, the colorful BMW M1 had an outstanding performance in one of the most famous races in the world: the 24 Hours of Le Mans that year. Poulain himself led it in the company of his compatriot Marcel Mignot and the German Manfred Winkelhock. The trio finished sixth overall and second in their class.
