In March 2020, almost at the same time that the coronavirus arrived in the region, the TCR South America, a category endorsed by the South American Automobile Sports Confederation (CODASUR) based on the successful vehicle concept TCR created by the Group WSC. Taking into account the success of this technical development in the world, the same was predicted for the brand new contest. However the COVID-19 got in the way ...
The constant restrictions, isolation and difficulties to go from one country to another only hindered the arrival of vehicles in South America and, obviously, evaporate the realization of the odd project. It was estimated to have more than twenty vehicles for the start, initially planned for March 2021. But that could not be possible.
Last weekend, on the Brazilian circuit Interlagos, the kickoff was given with a very scarce park of ten machines. But it was the way that those responsible for the South American TCR found to give the tournament credibility. It was necessary to start anyway and they did.
Five teams appeared for the appointment in Brazilian territory: Cobra Racing, PropCar Racing Team, MC Tubarão y W2 Racing, from Brazil; and the Squadra Martino, on the side of Argentina. The models represented were Audi RS 3 LMS, Honda Civic Type R y Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce.
The Spanish Pepe Oriola (Honda Civic Type R / W2 Racing) took the win in both races. In the first he was escorted by his partner Raphael reis and in the second by the American Paul holton (Alfa Romeo Giulietta Veloce / PropCar Racing Team).
Argentina's honor was defended by the Squadra Martino pilots who drove their Honda Civic Type: Ayrton chorne (6th and 3rd) and Jose Manuel Sapag (5th in both tests).
“Promoting a new category is a great challenge and in the middle of the process came a pandemic that made everything more difficult. With a lot of work and dedication from everyone involved, we arrived at Interlagos for the first race in the history of TCR South America ”, analyzed Federico Punteri, director of TCR South America.
“The championship format is internationally established and we are confident that it will quickly become popular with fans in the region. We took off in São Paulo with a new chapter for motorsports in South America and I am sure that the championship will continue to grow race by race ”, Agregó.
