El VW ID R Pikes Peak Electric completed its first test with a view to its participation in the 2018 edition of the Pikes Peak climb. The essay was in charge of the French Romain Dumas and it was carried out, precisely, in the legendary route in the US state of Colorado.
Since it is a public route, Volkswagen Motorsport He was only able to use the section that reaches an altitude of 4.302 meters for three hours. Beyond the short time of work, the German team obtained valuable information to find the optimal set-up of this impressive vehicle that delivers a power of 680 hp.
During these tests the work focused on the suspension, tire tests, the optimal use of battery charge and the recycling of energy when braking. “This first test at Pikes Peak was a success. This shows that our computer simulations and test units in Europe were correct ”, said François-Xavier Demaison, technical director of Volkswagen Motorsport.
Dumas was also enthusiastic about the experience: “The ID R Pikes Peak is the best car I have ever driven on this mountain. Acceleration and cornering speed are really impressive. Thanks to the electric drive, I don't need to change gears and I can concentrate on taking the right trajectories. "
“I know the track at Pikes Peak like the back of my hand, but this is the first time that I am going to drive a race car with an electric motor. I am learning with every meter I drive ", confessed the Gaul, who participated in several editions of this mythical climbing test.
VW's goal with the ID R Pikes Peak is to break the record for electric cars on June 24, which is 8m55s118 / 1000 to cover the 19,99 kilometers of the route that includes 156 curves.
