Although the 2021 season of the F1, in the team Mercedes they have their eyes on 2022. It is not for less since its current pilots, the English Lewis Hamilton and the finnish Valtteri Bottas, they have contracts signed only for this year. That suggests that the German team are seriously thinking about a replacement for the upcoming tournament.
And who would be the replacements for Hamilton and Mercedes? Drivers who are under the orbit of Mercedes, but who currently compete for other teams: English George Russell, actually in Williams; and french Esteban Ocon, today in Alpine (ex Renault).
Both Russell and Ocon meet the requirements of the Austrian Toto wolff: youth (23 and 24 years old, respectively), talent and, above all, contracts that expire at the end of 2021.
"Esteban is in the second year of his two-year contract with Renault and Alpine, and Russell will be with Williams this year, so we have different options for 2022, but until then our full support goes to Valtteri and Lewis." Wolff expressed to Speedweek.
"We will assess in the middle of the year if there will be a change in 2022. It is definitely too early now to talk about scenarios for next year", finished the team-manager.
