The 2021 season of the F1 enters its final stretch with the United States Grand Prix, 17th date of the tournament that takes place this weekend in the Circuit of the Americas, in Austin, Texas. It will be the return of the Maximum to the United States after the 2020 parenthesis forced by the coronavirus pandemic.

The track has been resurfaced at numerous points: the finish straight (including the exit from the pit lane), the exit from turn 1, the point that goes from the exit from 9 to 10, the final part of 11 and the section to 12, and the which links curves 15 to 19. To this change is added the correction of some potholes located between curves 2 and 3, 4, 6, 10 and 14. In all these areas the surface is now more regular.

One of the hallmarks of the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) is the curve 1, a hairpin that is approached after a steep climb. This circumstance complicates the taking of braking references, especially at the start of races. Otherwise, Austin is one of the most demanding tracks in terms of lateral energy, due to various turns taken at speeds between 250 and 270 km / h in the first sector, in which the 4,5 g sustained for three seconds in curve 6.

This track has not seen much activity in recent times, so the teams will find a very “green” asphalt at the beginning of the weekend. However, the presence in the program of the F4 and W Series (which take over from F2 and F3) will serve to accelerate the evolution of the track by depositing more rubber.

The winning strategy the Finn used Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) in 2019 included two pit visits (medium-hard-medium). His teammate, the English Lewis Hamilton, crossed the finish line in second place with a one-stop tactic (medium-hard). All three compounds played a prominent role throughout the race.

Pirelli maintains the same designation of tires from the last visit to the track: C2 as P Zero Blanco (hard), C3 as P Zero Yellow (medium) and C4 as P Zero Red (soft). These compounds are perfectly suited to the varied demands of the Texan circuit, which debuted at the World Championship in 2012.

The weather in Texas at this time of year can be unpredictable. The selection of compounds allows, in fact, to adapt to a wide range of temperatures, although it must be borne in mind that the 2021 edition of the American GP is held earlier than usual.
