After the premiere in the past Grand Prix of Great Britain el sprint format go back to F1 in the framework of Italian Grand Prix, the 14th date of the World Championship with the autodromo de Monza as a stage.
This layout is famous for its succession of high speed zones separated by heavy braking and technical sections. Long straights cool the tires, which can affect precision when entering the next turn. However, this factor is at the expense of the weather, which can be highly variable at this time of year.
The single-seaters will use packages of low downforce at Monza to minimize aerodynamic drag and increase top speed. Hence the emphasis is on mechanical grip over aerodynamics. The long straights of this track favor, on the other hand, the suction, as could be seen last year during qualifying.
Pirelli will move to Monza the three compounds of the middle zone, the most common choice for 2021: the P Zero White will be the C2 (hard), the P Zero Yellow the C3 (medium) and the P Zero Red the C4 (soft). These are the same compounds moved the last two seasons to Monza, as they offer a good balance for the demands of the Italian GP.
As there will be a sprint format, which includes a Saturday race to define the starting grid for Sunday's Grand Prix, the distribution of sets of tires per driver will be altered. Instead of the 13 sets for the whole weekend only 12 will be delivered, distributed as follows: two for the hard compound, four for the medium and six for the soft compound. In addition, each runner will have six intermediate games and three extreme rain games.
In qualifying for the sprint race, scheduled for Friday, only the soft compound may be used. On Saturday the drivers will have a free choice of tires and it will not be mandatory to stop in the pits to change the compound. At the end of the appointment, the set that has completed the most laps must be delivered. On Sunday, the tire regulations remain unchanged, except for the free choice of tires for the start.
The 2020 Italian GP was interrupted by a red flag, which affected tire strategies. In the end, the event turned into a 26-lap sprint on new tires (with the Top 6 opting for the medium compound).
In 2019, with the same tire designation as this year, the soft-hard strategy was the winner, despite the fact that the other two occupants of the podium chose to go from soft to medium.
