La F1 will play the weekend in Russian Grand Prix, 15th date of the season to be held in Sochi. This test, which has been in the World Championship since 2015, has always been won by team riders Mercedes.
English Lewis Hamilton, who is second in the tournament five points behind the Dutch Max Verstappen (Red Bull), celebrated in the 2014, 2015, 2018 and 2019 editions; while the remaining victories were for the German Nico Rosberg (2016) and the Finnish Valtteri Bottas (2017 and 2020).
Sochi is a low severity track and whose surface has matured steadily since its first asphalting almost a decade ago. Therefore, the softest range of tires for Pirelli it is an ideal choice.
The curves of this circuit, traced around the Olympic park from Sochi, they are of medium and low speed, with a significant number of 90º turns. As a general rule, it is a traction and braking route, so the severity will be concentrated on the rear tires.
The most demanding point on the track (and the only one where the front tires are particularly punished) is the curve 3, a left with multiple apices and reminiscent, in part, of the 8 in Turkey, the scene of the next GP on the calendar.
The teams choose here for aerodynamic packages of medium or low loadas a consequence of the long straights, which shifts the emphasis to the mechanical grip of the tires.
The track is not overused during the year, so it is usually very dirty at the beginning of the weekend. Consequently, it is common to see the tires slip more than necessary in the free tests on Friday. All in all, the evolution of the asphalt notably reduces the graining between Friday's runs and Sunday's race.
The Russian GP usually hosts racing to one stop, as already seen last year. The top two finishers then started in the middle and then switched to the hard compound. Other riders chose to start on soft, and there were up to three competitors who mounted the three available tires throughout the GP after stopping twice.
A mild weather is expected at this time of year, which will help reduce thermal degradation, although this aspect is more closely linked to the morphology of the route and the roughness of its asphalt.
