Russian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton, lightning in Sochi

The Mercedes driver will start from pole on the tenth round of the tournament after setting a new record for the track.

English Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) will start from pole position on Russian Grand Prix, tenth date of the World Cup F1, ahead of the Dutch Max Verstappen (Red Bull) and the Finnish Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes).

With his pole number 96, the current world champion will start the event in a privileged place to try to match the German Michael Schumacher as the driver with the most races in the Great Circus (91). Verstappen, missing throughout the session, took advantage of a brilliant last lap to start in the front row.

But conquering pole and the new circuit record was not easy for the six-time world champion. During Q2, just at the exit of the third corner, the German Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) went against the protections after performing a spin and the session was interrupted by a red flag.

Lewis HamiltonThat complicated Hamilton who was just about to make his only fast lap after he was canceled the first for exceeding the limits of the track. With only two minutes to go in the phase, the Englishman closed a good lap and achieved the goal of being among the privileged ten to fight for pole position. He was fourth in Q2 that had the Australian in front Daniel Ricciardo (Renault), followed by Bottas and the Spanish Carlos Sainz (McLaren).

Ricciardo set the first reference time in Q3, but Hamilton appeared to take the lead and improve his time to set the track record in 1:31.304. However, after the session an investigation was announced about him for not respecting the orders of the Race Direction to join the track at Turn 2.

Verstappen, meanwhile, asserted his great last lap to be second, just ahead of Bottas. The Mexican Sergio Pérez (Racing Point), Riccardo, Sainz, the French Esteban Ocon (Renault), the British Lando Norris (McLaren), the French Pierre Gasly (AlphaTauri) and the Thai Alexander albon (Red Bull) rounded out the Top 10.

The race will start on Sunday at 9.10 from Argentina and you can follow her through Automundo here!.
