One of the novelties of the 2021 season of the F1 has been the implementation of sprint format to determine the starting grid of a Grand Prix from the result of a short race that takes place on Saturday. This scheme, sponsored by a cryptocurrency, debuted in the British GP and will be used again in the Italian GPs y Brazil (as long as it is disputed ...). Although in principle it is a pilot test, Stefano domenicali, maximum reference of the category, he would have already raised his thumb and also it would be used in 2022 ...
“The idea of the sprint format was to offer something different and new to everyone interested in the F.1. We said that we wanted to do three tests, one has been done in Silverstone, another will be in Monza and the other will be in Brazil. At the end of this complete test, we will have a plan to see what the next step will be ”, Domenicali explained in a conference with investors from Wall Street.
When taking stock of the first experience in Silverstone, the executive assured that it was "positive". And I add, “It was great because it attracted the attention, the interest of the television and also of the partners. Because thanks to that we have brought, for example, Crypto.com. And so we have already seen that the financial influence has also been positive ”.
“We will have a full report at the end of the season. We have a plan for the future, of course. We are developing it, we are fine-tuning it after some of the feedback we have already received. And what I can say is that if we move as we should in that direction in the future, it will not be in every race ", anticipated the Italian.
In that sense, the sprint format would be used, according to the former Ferrari boss, "In historic Grand Prix and in certain Grand Prix that we want to offer and add to the already incredible platform of the F.1."
This format forces a change in the usual schedule for the category. The classification, for example, it takes place on Friday after a single training session. On Saturday, prior to the 100-kilometer competition, there is a second rehearsal. In addition, there is no podium celebration, although the winner of this Saturday test is awarded a laurel wreath and, in addition, it is considered like the "poleman" of the GP.
