Finished on Italian Grand Prix, 14th date of the World Cup F1 which won the australian Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren), the race authorities took enough time to analyze the incident involving the Englishman Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and the Dutch Max Verstappen (Red Bull) during the 25th lap of the competition.
After the pit stops the two candidates for the scepter met in the first chicane fighting for seventh place. Hamilton, who had just come out of the pits, tried to defend the position by getting into the inside sector; while Verstappen, who had stopped earlier; he tried to overcome it with a tight maneuver within the variant.
The Red Bull driver stepped on the piano with the wheels on the left side, his car got uncomfortable and after touching his rival's vehicle, he mounted on it, causing one of the tires of his machine to rub against Hamilton's head.
“The stewards listened to the driver of car 33 (Verstappen), the driver of car 44 (Hamilton) and the representatives of the teams, reviewed the video evidence and determined that the driver of car 33 was the main culprit of the accident with car 44 in curve 2 ", the FIA said in a statement. It continues as follows:
Car 44 was coming out of the pits. The 33 was on the main straight. At the 50 meter mark before Turn 1, car 44 was significantly ahead of 33, although at no point in the sequence was car 33 ahead of more than just behind the 44 ”front wheel.
“During the hearing, the driver of car 33 claimed that the cause of the incident was that the driver of car 44 opened the steering after turn 1 and 'squeezed' him to the apex of turn 2. The driver of 44 claimed that the one in 33 tried to overtake very late and should have loosened up earlier or turned left behind the curb. "
“The stewards observed in the TV images that the driver of car 44 was driving an evasion line, although his position caused the 33 to climb over the curb. But in addition the stewards observed that car 33 was not at all next to 44 until well before the entry into Turn 1 ”.
"In the opinion of the stewards, this maneuver was attempted too late for the driver of car 33 to have the right to race space, therefore, they considered that the driver of car 33 is the main culprit of the incident."
As a consequence of the above, the authorities decided to penalize Verstappen with the loss of three positions in the starting grid of the Russian Grand Prix to be held on September 26.
