Of everything. The first Saudi Arabian Grand Prix had everything. Accidents, two red flags, three starts, three leaders and the fight for victory between the candidates for the scepter of the F1. Enough to say that it had a good debut at the World Cup. The victory was for the English Lewis Hamilton (Mercerces), who added his third consecutive success and dreams of retaining the crown and conquering his eighth title.

The race held in the fast street of Jeddah had first ten laps to yawn. Hamilton and his Finnish partner Valtteri Bottas, who in that order dominated the standings, maintained their position after the start with the Dutchman Max Verstappen (Red Bull) in third place.

But the neglect of the German Mick Schumacher (Haas) on the XNUMXth turn everything changed. The son of Michael Schumacher he lost control of his car on the tenth turn and was embedded against the containment barriers of Turn 22, the same one where the Monegasque had already hit Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) on Friday.

The test was neutralized and the Mercedes men took the opportunity to change tires; while Verstappen preferred to stay on track. Four laps later, the second blow of the scene came when the GP with a red flag was stopped in order to change the defenses that were damaged.

That benefited the Red Bull driver, who in addition to starting the second part of the competition as leader, wore new tires while he waited for the restart in the pits without the need to make a pit stop.

On the second start Vestappen and Hamilton shared the front row. The Englishman started better and it seemed that he had won the first place from the leader of the tournament, but the Dutchman remained in front after making the first corner on the outside. The Frenchman took advantage of the tight maneuver Esteban Ocon (Alpine), who stood between the two contenders for the crown.

The first lap of this second part of the test was not completed, as another multiple accident in turn 3 forced a new red flag. This time those involved were the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), the Monegasque Charles Leclerc (Ferrari), the Russian Nikita mazepin (Haas) and English George Russell (Williams).

On the third start the race management decided to reposition Verstappen in third place because of what happened in the previous game. This allowed Ocon to start, followed by Hamilton and Verstappen.

Ocon's lead lasted only a few meters as Verstappen, now on medium compound, had a brilliant start and passed the Frenchman and Hamilton at the first corner. The trio stayed in that order until the Englishman made the Frenchman feel the speed of his Black Arrow and became the new second.

Verstappen and Hamilton thus began an intense battle for the victory, which was interrupted for a few laps by a virtual safety car to remove the remains of the Japanese cars from the track. Yuki tsunoda (AlphaTauri) and German Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin), who touched at the exit of a curve.

With 14 laps remaining, Hamilton's attack on Verstappen began. He took advantage of the DRS, caught up and tried to pass it around the outside of the first corner. But as happened at the São Paulo GP, Verstappen resisted and the two touched.

The sports commissioners asked the Red Bull to give up the position to Hamilton for what happened, but at the time when the multiple champion was going to be the new leader, Verstappen lifted him in the middle of the straight and Hamilton could not avoid hitting him, thus damaging part of the tube.

After several laps of that incident and without Verstappen returning the job properly, a five second penalty was applied. Something that allowed Hamilton, finally, not to worry about his rival and win the race and significantly shorten the gap since they will arrive at the Abu Dhabi GP tied.

The last step of the podium was for Bottas, who on the checkered flag surpassed Ocon. The Top 5 was completed by Bottas and the Australian Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren).

“It was a hectic race… A lot of things happened that I don't entirely agree with, but it is what it is. I slowed down, I wanted to let him pass, I was on the right, but he didn't want to overtake me and we touched. I really don't understand what happened ”, said Verstappen, that after the race received another 10 seconds of bonus for causing the collision with Hamilton.

“I have been racing for a long time, but this race was incredibly difficult! I tried to be as cool and sensible as possible, taking advantage of all my experience over the years… ”, said Hamilton, who achieved his eighth win of the year.

The final chapter of this exciting tournament will take place in a week with the Abu Dhabi GP.
