Will it be the luck of the champion? Maybe ... The truth is that the Dutch Max Verstappen (Red Bull) made the most of the misfortune of its two most serious rivals in the Monaco Grand Prix to achieve his first hit on the Monte Carlo street map and go to the front of the championship.

On a circuit where overtaking is difficult, Verstappen was the one who gained the most advantage from the mechanical problem that prevented him from poleman Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) be part of the competition.

The Monegasque was on the grid when he realized that the left bearing his car was not right. The failure had nothing to do with the accident he starred in on Saturday when he hit the guard-rail at the end of the session, but it was impossible to solve by the Scuderia and so the Monegasque stayed for third time in a row to see the checkered flag in "his" career.

Without Leclerc on the track, the Red Bull man had a unique chance to win and took advantage of it. A good game allowed him to stay at the front of the pack and keep the Finn at bay Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes), who tried unsuccessfully to keep up with him. The possibility of the Nordic to do podium vanished averaging the test when he entered to change tires and the mechanics were unable to remove the right front wheel, something that motivated the abandonment.

The escort position was inherited by the Spanish Carlos Sainz (Ferrari), who ran a race without errors, although that was not enough to threaten Verstappen's first place. The podium, finally, was completed by the English Lando Norris (McLaren), thus achieving its second Top 3 of the year.

To highlight the great work of the Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull), who after starting ninth was the only one in the Top 10 to gain multiple positions by finishing fourth. The credit was both his and his team, who made a great pit stop that allowed him to advance several places. In the same way, the German showed off Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin), who completed the Top 5 and achieved his best position since he began his time as a driver for the British team.

Verstappen achieved a key victory in his aspirations to win the English throne Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes), who had a terrible weekend as a result of the inexplicable mistakes of his team. They were wrong with the set-up for qualifying (he was seventh) and also with the strategy. He entered the pits in sixth place and crossed the finish line seventh, breaking a twelve-race streak on the podium. The only consolation was having set the lap record and adding an extra point.

Hamilton's unfortunate weekend allowed Verstappen to become the new leader of the tournament with four goals clear of the Sevenfold. There was also a change of command in the Builders Cup, which is now led by Red Bull. The World Cup will continue on June 6 with the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, another urban layout.
