The dutch Max Verstappen (Red Bull) achieved pole position for him Austrian Grand Prix, ninth date of the World Cup F1 that is disputed in the Red Bull Ring. For the tournament leader it is the third consecutive pole after those achieved in the French and Styrian GP's and the seventh in his campaign in F.1.
In the face of numerous followers from the Netherlands, Verstappen surpassed the British by just 48 thousandths of a second Lando Norris (McLaren), which rounded off a great Saturday. The Mexican Sergio Pérez (Red Bull) and English Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) complete the second row of the Austrian GP grid.
At 23, Verstappen has never been in such a prime position for a first world title. He leads the championship with 18 points more than the seven-time world champion Hamilton, who this Saturday renewed his contract with Mercedes for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
"Of course I am happy with the result", relativized the Dutch, who now wants "Finish the job" on Sunday.
This time it will be the surprising Norris, who will come second. The 21-year-old Briton posted his best performance in a qualifying session. Ninth in the World Cup last year, this year he is 4th and is in full progression.
"It's a good feeling"Norris confessed. "Thanks to everyone, to see the fans here, all in orange to support McLaren (the color of the team) and not Max, it's good to see them again…Norris joked, referring to the many Dutch people who filled the stands of the Red Bull Ring, evidently supporting Verstappen.
"Seeing the fans, orange or not, is crazy, so we will try to offer them a nice race tomorrow."Verstappen added.
English also surprised in the classification George Russell (Williams), who will start ninth. His position contrasts with that of his partner, the Canadian Nicholas latifi, who was relegated to 18th place.
A great absentee from the Top 10 was the Spanish Fernando Alonso (Alpine), who missed the opportunity to advance to Q3 after being covered by the German Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) during his fastest lap.
The Austrian Grand Prix will start on Sunday at 10 in Argentina.
