Mercedes announced his departure from Formula E

The German brand will say goodbye to the electric category in 2022 and will redirect its resources to the development of electric vehicles.

Just as the weekend had come forward, Mercedes-Benz decided to terminate his team Formula E. However, the farewell will be at the end of season 8 in 2022. This will allow the Dutch Nyck de vries, if it does not disembark in the F1, defend the crown that Berlin (Germany) achieved last Sunday. This measure was taken because the German brand wants "Redirect its resources to the development of electric vehicles".

This requires the accelerated transformation of our company, products and services towards an emission-free future and to achieve this we must fully focus on our core activities ”, explained Markus Schafer, Member of the Board of Directors of Daimler AG and Mercedes-Benz AG and Head of Daimler Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars.

"Formula E has been a good driver to demonstrate our expertise and establish our Mercedes-EQ brand, but in the future we will continue to drive technological progress, especially on the electric driving side, with a focus on Formula 1", Agregó.

Specifically regarding F.1, the executive assured: “It offers us great potential for technology transfer, as we can see in ongoing projects such as the Vision EQXX. In addition, our team and the entire category will reach zero net status by the end of the decade. ”

For its part, Toto wolff, Director of Mercedes-Benz Motorsport and CEO of the Mercedes-EQ Formula E Team, explained: “We entered Formula E with an open mind about the series and its innovative approach to motorsport. A lot of work went into building the team and making it competitive. We have seen an incredible group of talented men and women perform at the highest level. We can be proud of our achievements and especially of the double world championship won last weekend in Berlin, a historic milestone in the long history of Mercedes-Benz motorsport. We will do our best to ensure we finish our Formula E adventure in style in Season 8. ”

Although Mercedes-Benz will leave Formula E, the brand acknowledged that it has begun "To explore options for the team to continue competing in the series during the Gen 3 era and that includes a possible sale to new owners."
