Peugeot and Total develop a Hypercar to conquer glory at Le Mans

As part of the 88th edition of the legendary event, the companies announced their plans to run in the senior class of the WEC starting in 2022.

"Le Mans is the holy grail of motorsport". With these words Jean-Philippe Imparato, director of Peugeot , made official the return of the León brand to the mythical endurance test from 2022. For this it partnered with Total with the aim of designing a Hypercar for the new major category of the World Endurance that will have four-wheel drive and will develop a power of 500 kW.

This project, which is the responsibility of Peugeot Sport, is in tune with the launch of a series of hybrid models included under the brand Peugeot Sport Engineered and what has the new one Peugeot 508 like the tip of the spear.

Peugeot Total Hypercar“We go back to endurance racing because we have the opportunity to work in motorsport in another way with hybridization. This program allows us to fully enter the energy transition ”, Imparato admitted.

“Total is now a multi-energy group that knows how to cover all mobility needs, maintaining a pioneering spirit. This project by is the perfect embodiment of this "added Philippe Montantême, director of marketing strategy for the company.

The hypercar will be a 4 × 4 equipped, as required by regulations, with an electric motor with a maximum power of 200 kW on the front axle. The total power level will be identical to that of a car with 100% thermal traction with two driving wheels, about 680 hp, but distributed between the two axles.

"Compared to what we currently know in the LMP1 category, the car will be closer to road vehicles, therefore, with a greater mass and greater dimension", said Olivier Jansonnie, Peugeot's sports technical director in the WEC.

“We have already validated part of the aerodynamic concept and the engine architecture is defined. The hybrid system was also chosen. There are still many stages left until our arrival at endurance races in 2022 "Jansonnie added.
