For Bahrain Grand Prix de F1 of this weekend, which takes place within the framework of the first date of the tournament, the tire brand Pirelli It will have at the disposal of the teams the three compounds of the middle zone of its P Zero F1 range: C2 white (Lasted), C3 yellow (medium) and C4 red (soft). For the Italian company it will be a special GP since it will be the number 400 in its history.
This is exactly the same nomination that was used in the Bahrain GP held four months ago, although the covers now have a different construction. It is also worth noting that downforce on 2021 cars has been reduced in relation to the protagonists of the last campaign by virtue of the modifications of the technical regulations.
In the three days of pre-season training held at this same circuit, Pirelli made the entire P Zero range available to all teams, although many of them preferred to focus on the three compounds selected for this weekend. With the track being used so recently, the significant changes on its asphalt will not be appreciated, giving the teams a reliable base of work.
The new 2021 tires have been designed to improve their strength and durability, so that they can run at lower pressures. During tests last November in Bahrain pressures were reduced by 0,5 psi at the rear axle and 1,5 psi at the front.
In view of the analysis of the telemetry of those tests and, especially, as a consequence of the decrease in downforce in the cars, in the last preseason tests the pressure was reduced an extra 1,5 psi on the rear tires. This modification will remain in effect this weekend.
“During testing two weeks ago we saw many teams focusing their work on the compounds nominated for this Grand Prix, although the track conditions we encountered then may not be very representative for the race. In addition, the teams condensed a great disparity of filming schedules in three days, whereas until the past, when they had two weeks of work, they used to focus this second half of the preseason on the tires "Said Mario isola, responsible for Pirelli in F.1.
“For all this, we should not jump to conclusions. The new car and tire specifications, as well as the shortest preseason in our recent history, will open up the competition to the full. And especially if we take into account the characteristics of the Bahrain circuit, which has often provided interesting strategic battles "He said.
The maximum number of tire sets per rider remains 13, despite the reduction of one hour of running time in Friday's free practice sessions, which go from 90 to 60 minutes each.
