The 2021 edition of the rally Dakar Rally, to be held from January 3 to 15 again in Saudi Arabia, will have a novelty: a special category for replicas of vehicles that participated in the test until before 2000. Call Dakar Classic, this brand new division promises to give the grueling race a beautiful touch of nostalgia.
There are already several drivers and teams that have signed up for this original experience. Some of these structures have a lot of knowledge in the off-road world and are willing to provide their services for those who are part of the new adventure on Saudi soil.
Among the vehicles that can be used is this Porsche 911RS Safari inspired by the one who led to triumph Rene Metge in the 1984 edition of Paris-Dakar. That was the first of two Dakarian victories for the Stuttgart brand.
The other was also achieved by Metge, but on a 959. The models created by Porsche especially for this race always had the Safari naming.
It is worth noting that the admitted vehicles are copies of machines used in the last century, but prepared with the latest technologies and equipped with all current safety regulations.
A not minor fact of this new division is that cars and trucks powered by alternative energies. "That is the double challenge that the Dakar Classic formula responds to", they affirm from the organization.
The Dakar Classic will compete under the regularity mode, although participants can choose between two groups, depending on how fast they can be in the competition sections that will have some 350 kilometers travel and in which they must transit between 30 km / h and 70 km / h.
Undoubtedly, a challenge that those who want to race the Dakar will enjoy, but as in the old days ...
