English Sam sunderland, Gas Gas, took victory in the motorcycle category of the rally Dakar 2022 which was held in Saudi Arabia. This is the second he has achieved in the specialty after the one obtained in 2017 with KTM.
For the statistics it will remain that GasGas becomes a new winning brand, although in reality the motorcycle used it is nothing more than an official KTM since the brand born in Spain and specialized in trial is owned by the Austrian giant as well as Husqvarna.
With the triumph of GasGas, a result that aspires to position it in the market, the string of triumphs of Honda, who had celebrated in 2020 with the American Ricky Brabeck and in 2021 with the Argentine Kevin Benavidez, who this year tried to defend the crown with KTM (he abandoned in the tenth stage due to engine problems).
GasGas was strong from the start with the Australian Daniel sanders, who deserted after the rest day; and Sunderland himself, who alternated at the head of the general classification with other riders such as his own teammate or the French Adrien van beveren (Yamaha).
The podium of the two wheels was completed by the Chilean Paul Quintanilla (Honda), definitely the best South American driver; and the Austrian Matthias walkner (KTM).
With Kevin Benavidez out of the race, the witness of the best Argentine driver was taken by his brother Luciano (Husqvarna), who came in 13th position.
Of all the categories, it was the most disputed, although many drivers were saddened by what happened in the first stage with a complex road-book to understand in which several candidates, including the Benavides, lost valuable time that it cost to recover.
