Frenchman Sebastien Ogier was proclaimed WRC champion for the fifth time in a row after finishing third in Rally Great Britain, in which his British teammate Elfyn Evans prevailed.
This success makes Ogier the second driver with the most titles in the specialty behind his compatriot Sebastien Loeb, who achieved nine.
“This year has been difficult, but achieving this in the end is incredible. We have worked very hard, ”said the champion through tears.
To win the title before the last test in Australia, from 16 to 19 November, he needed to finish with a margin of 31 points over his last two rivals, Belgian Thierry Neuville (Hyundai) and fellow Estonian Ott Tänak.
Third in the race and fourth in the Power Stage, Ogier finished 32 points ahead of Neuville, second overall and winner of the Power Stage, and 46 over Tänak, sixth.
The other winner of the day was 28-year-old Evans, who achieved his first victory in the top competition. So far he had four podium finishes in 62 races since 2007.
The Welshman, the only local rider with options, was among the favorites for victory thanks to his DMACK tires, specially developed for the occasion.
M-Sport, the team of Ogier and Evans, achieved its fourth constructors' title (after 1979, 2006 and 2007), the first without official support from Ford.
