Volvo Trucks Argentina announced the arrival in the country of Iron Knight, a truck consecrated for breaking speed records approved by the International Automobile Federation.
With an average speed of 169 km/h and in a time of 21,29 seconds, the Iron Knight broke the world speed record in the 1.000 meter category from standing start. He also beat the 500 meter at 131,29 km/h and in 13,71 seconds.
Except for the standard dual-clutch I-Shift gearbox and engine that make up the core of the Iron Knight, the rest of the truck was developed by a team of experts from V who found an innovative way to merge technology with design.
Although the technical team worked with a kinematic chain based on the same unit that is installed in the Volvo FHThis vehicle is very special because during development the engine was pushed to the limit to deliver maximum power.
With 2.400 hp, 6.000 Nm of torque and a weight of 4,5 tonnes, the Iron Knight has a power-to-weight ratio of more than 0,5 hp / kg. The center-mounted engine is a conventional D13 model with exterior modifications for maximum performance. It has two air inlets with open filters and four turbochargers, in addition to three water-cooled heat exchangers.
Electronics have been reduced to a minimum to take weight off the vehicle. While the software has been reprogrammed to offer high performance. The aerodynamics of the cabin, made of fiberglass, has also been optimized. As are the large air intakes in the skirts that supply the engine with cooling air.
The chassis is designed with special bracing to keep all components in line while delivering maximum power. Thanks to all these modifications, Volvo's special truck accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in just 4.6 seconds.
The pilot at the wheel of the Iron Knight is Boije Ovebrink, who has more than 30 years of experience in car and truck racing, and who has broken the speed record together with Volvo. Previously, he had already broken five speed records and in 1994 he was European champion in truck racing.
“The Volvo Trucks Iron Knight could be described in one word: perfection. It has a striking design and offers unsurpassed power when the accelerator is fully depressed. This is the third record-breaking truck I've driven and I can't think of any other vehicle that could better follow in the wake of the Wild Viking and Mean Green ”, he assured.
