José María López could do little in his debut in the World Endurance Championship during the 6 Hours of Silverstone, the first date of the tournament. Is that Pechito, a Toyota GAZOO Racing driver, barely lasted a couple of laps in the old English airport before getting lost at more than 200 km / h.
At the time of the incident, Lopez was in fourth place in the Toyota TS050 HYBRID that he shares with England's Mike Conway and Japan's Kamui Kobayashi. In the previous one, the trio appeared as a great favorite since they dominated the Saturday classification and made sure to start from the first place. However, things got complicated in the race.
Conway was in charge of starting and during the first laps the vanguard alternated with the Swiss Sebastien Buemi, with the other Toyota also driven by the British Anthony Davidson and the Japanese Kazuki Nakajima. On lap 56 he gave the wheel to Kobayashi, who took longer than necessary to start the engine and lost about 20 seconds. The former F-1 returned to the track in fourth place, but was unable to keep up due to a problem with the anti-roll bar that forced him to pit laps later to try to fix the problem.
On lap 112, Lopez replaced the Japanese, but on the next lap he ran past the Copse corner and slammed into the rubber bumpers. Fortunately, Pechito was not injured. In fact, he had to wait for the track attendants to arrive to tow the car to the pits. He was then cared for by circuit doctors and was subsequently transferred to an Oxford hospital for further studies.
After an hour of work, Toyota mechanics repaired the car. With the sole aim of scoring points, Conway took him to fourth in the race won by Buemi, Davidson and Nakajima with six seconds ahead of Germany's Timo Bernhard and New Zealanders Brendon Hartley and Earl Bamber (Porsche).
"His back hurts, although it seems to me that his heart hurts more," said José María López Sr. about his son's unease, who will now have to wait for 6 Hours of Spa-Franchorchamps on May 6 to take revenge.[sam_pro id = "0_2" codes = "true"]
