Toyota is one of the few companies that takes motorsport as a powerful positioning tool. This is evident with its presence in world-class categories, such as WRC, Wec and Cross Country; and it is also replicated in Argentina with its official teams of Super TC2000, Top Race, National tourism, Argentine Rally y TC Pick Up. If something was missing from the Japanese brand, it is our country, it was to run in the Road Tourism, something that until not long ago seemed impossible and even crazy.
However, Toyota received the OK from the Road Tourism Corridors Association to be in the popular division in 2022 with Camry, something that will break with the tradition of having only vehicles Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge y Torino.
"We decided to go to the TC because it was a category in which we were not racing, although people already identified us with it because our Hilux pick-up is a service vehicle of the category", Told him Daniel Smith, President of Toyota Argentina, the autoworld in an exclusive interview that took place at the Zárate plant.
“After that we went on to compete in the TC Pick-Up and it went very well for us. At one point we decided - as I always say one has to suspend disbelief - that we could also run in TC. We discussed it with the lord Hugo mazacane, he understood us and well, we are in the project ", the executive confided.
-Can you know more details about the project?
-No, not yet; the only thing that is confirmed is that Matías Rossi will be one of the pilots and that we are going to go with the Camry.
-Regarding the 2022 sports program, what other novelty will there be, in addition to the brand's entry into the TC?
-Something else we're going to do. We are thinking of starting in the Top Race with some Lexus scheme (N.R .: Toyota's Premium brand). The idea is to keep growing.
-In other words, the support for the other categories will continue.
-Everything remains the same, with participation in all. Also with the Brazilian StockCar and with the IMSA and Supra. In other words, we are going to be in full swing with motorsports, which is something that gives us a lot of back: we currently have our Hilux Gazoo Racing, which is already a global model; and we work for the world so we are going to continue strong with this.
-Is there the possibility of any other international project, in addition to the participation of the brand in the IMSA?
-Yes, we are working from here to do something in Europe or Japan with Matías Rossi or Julián Santero.
-Going back to TC, with what result would you be satisfied in your first year?
-To be is already a good thing. I think it would be very ambitious to say that one wants to go to the TC to win from the outset. It is something that has to be learned, it is necessary to respect a category of many years and with names and teams of great fame. The idea is to be there, try not to play a bad role and then work to win.
